How does Interactive Document work as a student?

Updated over 2 months ago

Quick Student Explainer Video

Main Screen

Once you enter the Interactive Document assignment, you will see a preview of the document you have to read. Depending on the assignment, you may also see a box containing instructions from your teacher above that. Read those carefully. Click on 'Start reading' to open the document viewer.

Reading the Interactive Document

Once you've entered the Interactive Document, there are a few things to watch out for. Some very basic options are found on the top and bottom of the document viewer.

These icons in the screenshot below, from left to right, allow you to return to a minimised, LMS view (Focus/Unfocus); download the document (Download); upvote the document as useful (thumbs up); and enable notifications (bell).

Answering questions

Questions, both open and multiple choice, can be added by your teacher. Some questions are locked, which means you will first have to answer them before continuing with the document.

Below are examples of a multiple choice question. You have to click on the boxes next to the document for the questions to appear. After clicking the question box, the question will appear in the extreme right of your screen (when focus mode is on), where you can answer the question. After finishing the first question, repeat this procedure to answer the rest of the questions.

Once you answer a question, the correct answer may be revealed. You can also check this later by clicking on the question in the progress bar.

When answering an open question, the student is asked to rate how close their answer was to the correct answer set up by the teacher.

Adding questions and comments

Your teacher might have allowed you and your fellow students to add questions and comments yourself.

You can add a question or write a comment by clicking on the "plus" blue sign located in the bottom right of the document or by selecting a part of the document where you want to add a question or comment. If you do not see the plus sign, this means your teacher has not allowed you to write questions or comments.

After posting your question or comment you can also edit it, you will get the option to edit or delete it by clicking the 3 vertically placed points in the upper right corner.

Replying to comments

Your teacher or fellow students might have left comments to the document. You can interact with these posts through the right bar. As you can see in the example below, the comment got two replies. You are able to respond to the comment or to the replies of other people. You can respond to a reply by clicking on the text balloon icon below it.

As you can see in the screenshot above, you also have the option to "upvote" a comment or a reply if you think the comment/reply is useful by clicking on the thumbs up icon. You are not able to upvote your own comments.

The Social & Summary Bar (Right)

As you've perhaps noticed, there is a retractable menu bar on the right of the screen. This can perform several functions, in addition to the ones presented in the previous screenshot. By default, it will show annotations/questions sorted on location (1). You can also sort these on when they were added, number of upvotes or number of comments (2). Additionally, you can use this menu to add replies to or upvote questions (3). Finally, when you click any of the questions in the list. If you've already answered the question, you will see the option you chose and the correct one (4), and if you've not yet answered, you will get the option to chose an answer and submit it (5).

Tracking your progress.

In the bar at the top of the assignment you can see an overview of how much of the assignment you have completed and how many elements you can still complete in order to receive a full grade.

Clicking on the progress icons you can find how many discussions and questions are still available for you to join in order to receive a grade.

This concludes the Interactive Document | Student Perspective tutorial.
