This article talks about a BETA version of the tool. If you're not a part of an institution that participates in the testing, please refer to the other article.
Introduction
In this article we'll walk you through how to set up Quiz from the perspective of a teacher.

How this article is structured
Setting up an activity now follows three stages, shown in the bar at the top of the activity whenever you're in edit mode:
- Build activity: get an overview of your activity and add or remove steps.
- Edit steps: configure each step one at a time (instructions, questions, collaboration, and answer visibility).
- Setup activity: set what applies to the whole activity, such as deadlines, grade weighting, and group settings.
This article follows the same order. Everything below describes what you can configure before the activity is published. Students cannot access the activity at this stage. You can still edit some settings after publishing. However, once students start making progress, certain options lock to protect their work and data, and we'll note wherever that applies.
Note: When you open a published activity, you'll land on the Active Assignment view by default. To return to setup, click Edit in the upper-left corner. See the Active Assignment article.
Accessibility
We're devoted to making our tools as accessible as possible for all learners. To read more, see Accessibility: Within FeedbackFruits Tools.
Stage 1 — Build activity
This is your starting point. Here you see every step in the activity in order, and you can shape the activity before configuring the details.
A default Quiz activity contains:
- Quiz (Answer the questions)
When your steps are in place, move to Edit steps to configure each one.
Stage 2 — Edit steps
Here you set up the activity step by step. Each step shows its own settings and a Student preview, so you can see what learners will see.
Step 1: Instructions
Write the instructions students see when they open the activity. Type directly into the instructions field; the student preview updates alongside.
Step 2: Quiz
This is where you build the quiz itself and decide how students work through it.
Creating questions
Click Start creating questions to begin. If the quiz is empty, you'll see a blank question list. If you've already added questions, use the plus (+) button between existing questions to insert a new one at that exact point in the sequence.
For each new question, choose a type:
- Multiple choice question
- Open question
See the Question types reference below for how to set up each type.
Quiz settings
- Scratch-off mode: enable or disable scratch-off mode for the quiz.
- Student collaboration: choose whether students participate Individually, with results shown per student, or Individually, with results displayed in groups. Groups can be linked directly to the groups in your LMS.
Advanced settings (Give feedback):
- Multiple attempts: choose whether students can submit more than one attempt.
- Reveal correct answers: choose to reveal correct answers Right after submitting an answer or Never.
Reminder: collaboration options must be set before students participate. Once a student has engaged with the assignment, they can't be changed.
Stage 3 — Setup activity
The final stage gathers the settings that apply to the whole activity. These are the ones you'll most often revisit. On the left you keep the step overview, and on the right you set activity-wide options: Deadlines, Grade weighting, and Advanced settings.
Deadlines
Enable Deadlines, then set start/end dates per step in one place. The date picker offers quick options (e.g. previous step ends, 1 day after, 1 week after) as well as a calendar. Leaving a deadline blank keeps that step open indefinitely.
Grade weighting
If you added a Grading step, set how the quiz contributes to the student's grade here. Keep in mind that multiple choice questions are scored automatically, while open questions require manual grading.
Advanced settings (Grade weighting)
Additional grading options in Advanced settings:
Grade type — publish the grade as a Percentage or Pass/fail.
Require participation to receive a grade — if enabled, only students who open the learning activity receive a grade.
Schedule grade publish — automatically publish grades at a selected date, or auto-publish after completing graded steps (publishes a student's overall grade once they complete all graded steps).
For more on the configurable grading module, see this article. Once your activity is ready, click Done in the upper-right corner.
Groups
If you chose to display results in groups, select the group set here. For configuring groups inside Blackboard, Brightspace, or Canvas, see this article. If you can't sync groups from your LMS or you're using the platform directly, see this article.
When everything looks right, Save and publish.
Question types reference
| Question type | Graded | Correct answer | Attachments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | Automatically | Required (one or more options) | On the question and on individual answer options |
| Open question | Manually | Optional | On the question |
Multiple choice questions
- Single or multiple answers: decide whether students may select one answer or several.
- Correct answer: tick the checkbox next to each correct option.
- Attachments: add files to the question itself or to individual answer options.
- Answer explanations: add an explanation to any option. Students see it when they select that option, so you can use it as corrective feedback on wrong answers or as confirmation on right ones.
Open questions
- Question: enter the question in the text field and optionally add an attachment.
- Correct answer (optional): provide a model answer, or leave it empty if the question is meant as a reflection or discussion prompt.
- Save or cancel: use the buttons in the top-right corner of the question.
Open questions require manual grading. For example, if a student's answer only partly meets your model answer, you can award a partial score such as 50%. You can also engage with responses directly by upvoting them or replying to individual answers.
Good to know
- If students have already engaged with the assignment, you won't be able to change the student collaboration options.
- You can use LaTeX when setting up questions.
- The character limit is 10,000 characters per quiz.
