Introduction

In this article we will walk you through how to use Assignment Review from the perspective of a teacher.

If you’d like more information on how this tool works, you can check out the overview article here:

Tool In Action

Accessibility

We're devoted to making our tools as accessible as possible for all learners - to read more about accessibility in FeedbackFruits tools, check this article: Accessibility: Within FeedbackFruits Tools.

Overall Student Progress

At the top of the assignment, you will see the Overall student progress overview. Click on Statistics per active student to see individual students' progress. Here, you can see if students have read the instructions, handed in their work, read their feedback and finally, if students have written their reflections, if enabled.

Fig. 1: Overall student progress: Active assignment

Click on the headers in each column to change the order (ascending or descending) in which students are displayed. You can also click Fullscreen to pop out the full display of student progress.

Fig. 2: Full screen statistics per active student analytics

The check marks under read instructions and submissions mean that that student has finished the step. The light green dot means the student has not read the instructions or submitted his file yet. If you see a red dot, this means the student has missed the deadline for handing in.

Under the Given Reviews and Received Reviews headers, you will find the completion status of each review for each student. If a student has completed the module, it will display ✔ Completed instead of a percentage.

It is also possible to export all the student data into an excel file. This file contains information concerning review ratings, review comments and grading. You can download this export by clicking on the EXPORT ANALYTICS button in the overall student progress window.

Step 1: Instructions

Instructions: Setting Up

Here, you can write instructions for the students regarding this assignment. You can also add items, such as attaching a file or recording audio/video, by clicking Add items if needed.

Fig. 3: Instruction: Setting up

Collaboration Options

Directly underneath the instructions, you can select options for student collaboration.

Fig. 4: Student collaboration options

When selecting student collaboration options, there are several configurations to choose from. Please bear in mind that collaboration options need to be selected before students participate in the assignment - once a student makes progress, the configurations can't be updated.

Fig. 5: Collaboration options expanded

Options for students hand in:

  1. Individually

  2. As a group

Options for Teacher reviews students:

  1. Individually. Teacher review students individually. (Disabled if ‘as a group’ option for hand in is chosen).

  2. As a group. Teacher reviews students as a group. (Disabled if ‘individually’ option for hand in is chosen).

  3. Individually, shown as groups. Teacher reviews students individually, but the results will be presented as a group. (Disabled if ‘individually’ option for hand in is chosen).

Instructions: Active Assignment

Here, you can view the instructions you wrote while setting up the assignment. You can edit them by clicking on the Edit button in the top right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Submissions

Submission Options: Setting Up

When creating your assignment, you can configure submission options for your students.

Fig. 7: Submissions: Setting up options

Required number of files to hand in: Set the amount of files that students are required to hand in. The submission requirement can be set at exactly, minimum or between your chosen amount. Students can always hand in more files than required.

Scheduling deadlines: Set the hand-in deadline. Students have to upload their work before this deadline. After the deadline expires, students will no longer be able to submit their file and receive feedback. If no deadline is specified at this stage, students are free to utilize the submission section and receive feedback at their convenience.

If a deadline for submission has been set for the students, you have the option to allow for students to hand in after the submission deadline has passed. Simply enable this option (as shown on the screenshot below), and students will be able to hand in after the submission deadline as well. Keep in mind that enabling this option will not affect the student analytics - you will still be able to see if students have submitted on time or not.

Fig. 8: Enabling handing in late is allowed option

File requirements: Check the box next to the file type you want your students to hand in. Students will not be able to upload file types to you deselect. For an overview of which formats are supported for each file type, click here.

Please note that embedded audio and video in documents and slideshows cannot be played in FeedbackFruits.

Plagiarism check: If your institution has opted into our Turnitin integration, you can select here whether the check should be toggled on or off. You can read more information here: Turnitin FAQ

Visibility: Choose whether you want the student's file to be visible to everyone or only to students who have submitted their work. Please note that these options become available only after the submission deadline has passed. As a teacher, you will always have access to all the work.

Guiding students (optional): If you have specific hand-in instructions for your students (such as the desired font, line spacing, naming the file, etc.) fill them in here. Example: Please name your student number in the file-name. Upload both your essay and the slides you will use when presenting about your essay.

Submissions: Active Assignment

Once the assignment has been set up, this step provides an overview of which students’ have completed their hand-in. It also provides information on whether it is handed in on time and how many days prior to the deadline. The files handed in shows the documents that the student has submitted.

Fig. 9: Submissions: Active assignment

Fig. 10: Submissions: Fullscreen

If the deadline has passed, but you want students to be able to still submit their work, you can edit the assignment, and either change the deadline, give a deadline extension to a specific student or enable allow late hand-in.

Fig. 11: Deadline extension options

Student submissions can also be accessed directly from the assignment. There are two ways to do this:

  1. Click on the View Submissions option located below the grade percentage. This will open a new page displaying submissions in the order they were submitted.

  2. In the row corresponding to a student's name, click on the file listed in the Files Handed In column to see their submissions. Select View to open the submitted work. This way is ideal if you want to review a specific student's submission.

Note: If the student has submitted a video, you will see the video player instead of the document.

Fig. 12: Viewing the student's file

Clicking the View button will direct you to the following page:

Fig. 13: Submission page

If the student submitted a video, a video player will appear instead of a document. Clicking the Open button will allow you to access their file.

Step 3: Give feedback on student work

Given feedback on student work: Setting Up

In this step, you can specify criteria to help guide students as they give feedback. Click configure to edit, add, or delete criteria. Click here for a detailed guide on setting criteria.

You can also create reusable explanation cards, which will save you time when providing feedback to your students.

Fig. 14: Give feedback on student work: Setting up

Visibility: Choose when the students can see their feedback. You can set this to immediately, after certain date, or never.

Fig. 15: Visibility options

Given feedback on student work: Active Assignment

In the active assignment, you can view an overview of your progress in providing feedback on your students' work. This includes your review status, progress in evaluating student submissions, the list of reviewers (if other teachers are also using this tool), review comments received, and the files submitted by students.

Fig. 16: Give feedback on student work: Active assignment

Fig. 17: Analytics fullscreen

To begin, click the purple Start Reviewing button (or Continue Reviewing if you've already started) to review students' submissions in the order they were submitted. Alternatively, if you prefer to review specific students or are collaborating with another instructor, hover over the area next to a student's name, and a Review button will appear.

Fig. 18: Reviewing student's work

When you click Review, you will be directed to the reviewing page. Here, you can see the name of the student you are currently reviewing, your progress below their name, their submission, and the feedback criteria you configured in the settings when you scroll down. You can then start providing your review.

If other teachers are assigned to review the same student, you can switch between reviews using the Show feedback given by option. You can choose to view all reviews, only your feedback, or feedback from a specific colleague. This feature is helpful for comparing your feedback with that of other teachers.

Fig. 19: Reviewing page

This is the end of the review step. You are able to exit the screen by pressing the arrow button on the top left or continue to the next student by pressing the next student button at the bottom on the top right. You can also download the feedback by clicking the download icon next to full screen icon.

Step 4: Received Reviews

Received reviews: Setting Up

Setting up received reviews is straightforward since there are only two options for this step.

Feedback-on-feedback: you can toggle whether or not students rate their received feedback on a scale of 1 to 10, with optional written clarification.

Scheduling deadlines: Set the deadline for reviewing received feedback. Leave the deadline blank to allow reviewees to view and their feedback indefinitely, without being too late to review.

Fig. 21: Received reviews: Setting up

Received Reviews: Active Assignment

In this step, you can track which students have read their received reviews, identify those who still need to review all their feedback, view the time each student spent on each review, and see the average number of comments they received from teachers.

Step 5: Reflect on Activity (optional)

Reflections: Setting Up

In step 5, The parameters for reflecting on the outcomes of the activity and their learning are set. You can set a deadline, specify the required length of the written reflection (including minimum and maximum word counts), and enable features like the Reflection Coach, which provides AI-powered, real-time feedback to help students improve their reflections. This option is available under the Guiding Students section.

However, please note that this step is optional. If you decide that student reflections are unnecessary, you can remove this step by clicking the X button in the top right corner.

Fig. 24: Reflection: Setting up

Reflections: Active Assignment

Writing a reflection is a valuable step to end an assignment with. The student can for instance write a reflection on how the whole process of giving feedback went. The teacher sees this reflection in an overview in step 5 as shown in the image below.

Here, the teacher can see which groups and specific students have made progress on completing their reflection. Only students and groups with progress in this step are shown. To view all of their reflections, press the View Reflections button. If you'd like to read the reflection of a specific student, clicking on View next to the name of the student will show you their reflection.

Grading

Grading: Setting up

After finishing setting up the core of the assignment, it is possible to add the configurable grading module. Click here to learn more about how this grading module works.

Fig. 26: Grading: Setting up

By clicking configure, you can customize your grading criteria and toggle certain parameters on or off depending on the needs of the particular assignment you're setting up:

Fig. 27: Configure grades

Grading: Active Assignment

In this step, you have to access a comprehensive overview detailing the grades of each student within the system.

If the teacher has included grading in the settings, it will be visible after the last step. The image below shows what that will look like. By clicking on the arrow on the right or using the scroll bar at the bottom, the teacher can view the rest of the grade sections (from left to right). On the far right there is also an optional grade adjustment . This allows the teacher to add or subtract points for each student. Click on Fullscreen to get a better view.
