UI Update: Analytics

An article detailing the quality of life updates we're making to our analytics in tool modules.

Updated over a week ago

Introduction

This article will take you through the recent changes made to analytics visualizations as of October 4th, 2024.

Why Did We Make These Changes?

As part of our commitment to consistency and simplifying the user experience, we’ve updated our analytics availability across our tool suite.

We have divided each tool into modules - these modules are any step within the assignment, e.g. within Peer Review there’s instructions, submissions, given reviews, received reviews and grading. Modules are the components, or steps, that make up a full assignment.

Not all analytics were shown where they belong. For example, in Interactive Document, the Document module would show all analytics in the Statistics per active student, while the Document module in Team-Based Learning did not show any analytics in this section.

The analytics available are specific for an individual module, so we want to show them in the module itself consistently within all tools. Likewise, the Statistics per active student section no longer contains specific analytics about the individual modules but instead the progress per student per module, which makes it easier to get an overview of the progress per student.

Having our analytics appear in a consistent and clear manner creates a more cohesive user experience across our tool suite (of course accounting for certain exceptions where needed, e.g. only certain modules have a Status column with chips like Completed).

What Changes Did We Make?

Below, we’ll cover all updates made to analytics - some adjustments were made across all tools, whereas in other cases there were individual adjustments per tool. Please note - where applicable we've added before and after of the tools, but in some cases this was not applicable (e.g. in a tool that previously did not have status chips, there is no before to show).

In All Tools

  • The Statistics per active student section at the top of each assignment now shows the progress per module for each student, their overall grade, and the average for all students.

  • All modules that have a status column now have chips like Completed, Not started, or partially completed. Modules that have multiple requirements (e.g. the progress can be, for example, 50%) also have a progress column.

  • All modules have the text x/y participants active to demonstrate active participants per module.

  • All modules have a demonstrative empty state instead of a generic one (e.g. within Interactive Video, the empty state shows as Awaiting students to view the material instead of No students have made progress in the multimedia-task yet)

  • All modules have an Everyone column with analytics (e.g. averages) about all active students.

  • The color of the check mark icon in the analytics is now green.

Grading Module

  • The Participation Grading, Valuable Contributions, Peer Discussion & Open Discussion modules no longer have 2 tables, but 1.

    • For Participation Grading the overall appearance has also been improved.

  • The alignment of grades in the Grading module table has been slightly improved.

Quiz

  • The Quiz analytics are now moved to the module itself.

  • The started viewing column in the Quiz analytics is removed, as it didn't add more information than reading the instructions.

  • The Quiz module has a more narrow cover image.

Interactive Study Materials (Interactive Video, Audio, Document)

  • The Interactive Study Material analytics are now moved to the module itself (both the analytics and the overview of the questions).

    • It replaces the overview of in-document activities, as most of this information is shown in the analytics table as well.

  • The Document/Video/Audio modules all have a more narrow cover image.
