Introduction

In this article, we'll walk you through how to set up an AI Practice activity from the perspective of a teacher.

AI Practice gives students a structured environment to practise working with AI. Students can use the AI conversation to explore ideas, solve problems, improve a piece of work, or practise other AI skills based on the instructions you provide.

AI Practice comes with pre-configured instructions that you can adapt to better match your learning objectives.

How this article is structured

Setting up an activity follows three stages, shown at the top of the activity whenever you're in edit mode:

1. Build activity — get an overview of your activity and its learning steps.

2. Edit steps — configure each step individually.

3. Finalize activity — configure settings that apply across the activity, such as deadlines and grade weighting.

Everything below describes what you can configure before the activity is published — students cannot access the activity at this stage. You can still edit some settings after publishing; however, once students start making progress, certain options lock to protect their work and data. Wherever that applies, we'll note it.

Note: When you open a published activity, you'll land on the Active Assignment view by default. To return to setup, click Edit in the upper-left corner.

Stage 1 — Build activity

The Build activity stage gives you an overview of the learning steps included in your activity.

The setup shown in this article contains:

1. Read instructions

2. Practice AI Skills

3. Give feedback to peers

4. Read received feedback

The feedback steps can be used to let students review each other's AI conversations after they have been submitted. Once your activity structure is ready, continue to Edit steps.

 

Stage 2 — Edit steps

Here you configure each learning step individually. A Student preview is shown alongside the settings so you can see how the activity will appear to students.

Step 1: Read instructions

Add the instructions students will see when they begin the activity. Use this section to explain the purpose of the activity, how you expect students to use AI, and what they should focus on during their conversation.

 

Step 2: Practice AI Skills

Configure the AI conversation students will complete. Students can start a new chat and interact with AI based on the instructions you provide. Their submitted conversation can then be used in later learning steps, such as peer feedback.

Instructions

Add instructions that explain what students should practise with the AI and what is expected from their conversation.

For example, you can ask students to use AI to explore different perspectives, improve a piece of work, work through a problem, or support their study process.

Prompt suggestions

Enable Prompt suggestions to show students four suggested prompts when they start a new conversation.

These prompts provide students with optional starting points for their interaction with AI. Students can choose one of the suggestions or start the conversation in their own way.

Submitter anonymity

Enable Submitter anonymity if submitted conversations should appear anonymously to other students. Pease note that teachers can still see who submitted the conversation.

Advanced settings

Click Advanced settings to configure the visibility of submitted conversations.

Visibility of hand ins

Choose who can access students' submitted AI conversations. Use this setting to control whether a submitted conversation is available only to allocated reviewers or to a wider group of participants.

 

Step 3: Give feedback to peers

Configure how students review and provide feedback on their peers' submitted AI conversations.

Students give feedback as

Choose whether students provide feedback:

• An individual — each student completes their own reviews.

• A group — students provide feedback together as a group, when available for the activity setup.

Students can give feedback

Choose which participants students are allowed to review.

Number of peers to review

Set how many peers each student is required to review. You can select a specific number or choose All peers.

Feedback criteria

Click Add criteria to define what students should focus on when reviewing their peers' AI conversations.

Feedback criteria help structure the review and guide students towards the areas you want them to evaluate.

How are students allocated to reviews

Choose how peer reviews are allocated to students.

When do students see their feedback

Choose when students can access the feedback they receive from their peers.

Reviewer anonymity

Enable Reviewer anonymity if reviews should appear anonymously to other students. Teachers can still see who provided the feedback.

AI coach

Enable AI coach to provide students with AI-powered, real-time support while they write feedback.

Advanced settings

Click Advanced settings for additional peer review options.

Self-assessment

Enable Self-assessment to have students start the review process by reviewing their own work. This can encourage students to reflect on their own AI conversation before assessing their peers.

Feedback writing tips

Enable Feedback writing tips to show students tips while they review their peers. These tips are shown throughout the review process to support students in writing higher-quality feedback.

Review checklist

Enable Review checklist to show students a checklist while they provide feedback. The checklist encourages students to reflect on how they have formulated their feedback before completing the review.

Optional instructions for this step

Add any additional instructions students should follow when reviewing their peers.

 

Step 4: Read received feedback

This step is where students can access the feedback they receive from their peers.

Feedback on feedback

Enable Feedback on feedback to allow students to rate how useful they found the feedback they received. Students rate the usefulness of the feedback on a scale from 1 to 10.

 

Stage 3 — Finalize activity

The Finalize activity stage contains settings that apply across the activity.

Deadlines

Turn on Deadlines to add end dates to applicable learning steps. Once enabled, you can set an end date for steps such as Practice AI Skills, Give feedback to peers, and Read received feedback.

Grade weighting

Turn on Grade weighting to determine how different components of the activity contribute to the overall grade. You can assign grade weighting to criteria such as:

• Submitting an AI conversation

• Completing peer feedback

• Writing the required number of review comments

• Reading received feedback

Make sure the total grade weighting adds up to 100%.

Advanced settings

Click Advanced settings under Grade weighting for additional grading options.

Grade type

Choose how the overall grade is calculated:

• Percentage — students receive a percentage-based grade.

• Pass/fail — students receive a pass or fail result.

Require participation to receive a grade

Enable this option so that only students who participate in the learning activity receive a grade.

Schedule grade publish

Enable Schedule grade publish to automatically publish grades on a selected date.

Auto-publish after completing graded steps

Enable this option to automatically publish an individual student's overall grade once they have completed all graded learning steps. Once everything is configured, click Done.
