Introduction

In this article, we'll walk you through how to set up an Oral Reflection activity from the perspective of a teacher.

Oral Reflection allows students to record a structured spoken reflection based on topics and questions you define. You can configure how students complete the reflection, review their recordings, and provide feedback afterwards.

How this article is structured

Setting up an activity follows three stages, shown at the top of the activity whenever you're in edit mode:

1. Build activity — get an overview of your activity and its learning steps.

2. Edit steps — configure each step individually.

3. Finalize activity — configure settings that apply across the activity, such as deadlines and grade weighting.

Everything below describes what you can configure before the activity is published — students cannot access the activity at this stage. You can still edit some settings after publishing; however, once students start making progress, certain options lock to protect their work and data. Wherever that applies, we'll note it.

Note: When you open a published activity, you'll land on the Active Assignment view by default. To return to setup, click Edit in the upper-left corner.

Stage 1 — Build activity

The Build activity stage gives you an overview of the learning steps in your activity.

The setup shown in this article contains:

1. Read instructions

2. Hand in

3. Oral Reflection

4. Feedback by teacher

5. Read received feedback

Use this stage to review the structure of your activity before configuring each step.

Once your activity structure is ready, continue to Edit steps.

Stage 2 — Edit steps

Here you configure each learning step individually. A Student preview is shown alongside the settings so you can see how the activity will appear to students.

Step 1: Instructions

Add the instructions students will see when they begin the activity. Type your instructions directly into the field on the right.

Step 2: Hand in

Configure how students submit the work connected to their reflection.

Students hand in as

Choose whether students submit their work:

• An individual

• A group

Required files

Set how many files students are required to submit. You can choose:

• Minimum

• Between

• Exactly

Then select the required number of files.

Allowed file formats

Select which types of files students are allowed to submit:

• Document

• Video

• Website

• Image

• Audio

• Other

Submitter anonymity

Enable Submitter anonymity if student contributions should appear anonymously to other students. Teachers can still see who submitted the work.

Advanced settings

Click Advanced settings for additional Hand in options.

Plagiarism check

Enable Plagiarism check to have submitted documents checked using Turnitin.

Visibility of hand ins

Choose who can see students' submitted work.

Optional instructions for this step

Add any additional instructions that apply specifically to the Hand in step.

Step 3: Oral Reflection

Configure how students complete their spoken reflection.

Conversation mode

Choose how students complete their oral reflection:

• Solo — students complete the reflection individually and record their own responses to the topics and questions.

• Peer — students complete the reflection together with another student, allowing them to respond and reflect in conversation with each other.

• With Agent — students complete the reflection in a guided conversation with the AI agent, which prompts them through the reflection.

Allow retries

Enable Allow retries to allow students to redo their recording.

AI highlights

Enable AI highlights to surface AI-generated highlights from students' recordings.

Topics & questions

Click Edit next to Topics & questions to configure the topics and questions students will respond to during their reflection.

Advanced settings

Click Advanced settings to configure additional options for the Oral Reflection step.

Visibility of recordings

Choose who can see students' recordings.

Notify educators on recording completion

Enable this option to notify educators when students complete a recording.

Guiding instructions

Add instructions to guide students while completing their oral reflection.

Step 4: Feedback by teacher

Here you can configure how teachers provide feedback on students' work and reflection.

Feedback criteria

Click Add criteria to define the criteria teachers will use when providing feedback.

When do students see their feedback

Choose when students can access the feedback they receive.

AI coach

Enable AI coach to provide AI-powered, real-time support while feedback is being written.

Advanced settings

Click Advanced settings for additional feedback options.

Explanation cards

Click Edit to add or manage explanation cards for the feedback step.

Step 5: Read received feedback

Configure how students interact with the feedback they receive.

Feedback on feedback

Enable Feedback on feedback to allow students to rate the usefulness of the feedback they receive on a scale from 1 to 10.

Stage 3 — Finalize activity

The Finalize activity stage contains settings that apply across the activity.

Deadlines

Turn on Deadlines to add end dates to applicable learning steps. Once enabled, you can configure the relevant deadline for each step from the activity overview.

Grade weighting

Turn on Grade weighting to configure how the graded components of the activity contribute to the overall grade.

Once everything is configured, click Done.
