This article talks about a BETA version of the tool. If you're not a part of an institution that participates in the testing, please refer to the other article.
Introduction
In this article, we'll walk you through how to set up Automated Feedback from the perspective of a teacher.
Automated Feedback provides students with additional formative feedback before handing in their work. Automated Feedback should be used as an additional opportunity for students to reflect on and improve their work, rather than to grade the quality of their work.

How this article is structured
Setting up an activity follows three stages, shown at the top of the activity whenever you're in edit mode:
Build activity — get an overview of your activity and add or remove learning steps.
Edit steps — configure each step individually.
Finalize activity — configure settings that apply across the activity, such as deadlines and grade weighting.
Everything below describes what you can configure before the activity is published.
Accessibility
We're devoted to making our tools as accessible as possible for all learners. To read more, see Accessibility: Within FeedbackFruits Tools.
Stage 1 — Build activity
This is your starting point. Here you can see the learning steps included in your activity and adjust its structure before configuring each step.
A default Automated Feedback activity contains:
Read instructions
Hand in
Automated feedback
Once your activity structure is ready, continue to Edit steps.
Stage 2 — Edit steps
Here you configure each learning step individually. A Student preview is shown alongside the settings so you can see how the activity will appear to students.
Step 1: Read instructions
Add the instructions students will see when they begin the activity. Type your instructions directly into the field on the right.
Step 2: Hand in
Configure how students submit their work.
Students hand in as
Choose whether students hand in their work:
- An individual
- A group
Required files
Set how many files students are required to submit.
You can choose:
- Minimum
- Between
- Exactly
Then select the required number of files.
Allowed file formats
Select which file formats students are allowed to submit. The available options shown in the setup are:
- Document
- Video
- Website
- Image
- Audio
- Other
Submitter anonymity
Enable Submitter anonymity if student contributions should appear anonymously to other students. Teachers can still see who submitted the work.
Advanced settings
Open Advanced settings for additional Hand in options.
Plagiarism check
If your institution uses the Turnitin integration, enable Plagiarism check to have submitted documents checked for plagiarism.
Visibility of hand ins
Choose who can see submitted work.
Optional instructions for this step
Add any instructions that apply specifically to the Hand in step, such as requirements for naming or formatting submitted work.
Step 3: Automated feedback
Configure the criteria that Automated Feedback uses when reviewing students' work.
Feedback criteria
Click Get started to add the feedback criteria you want Automated Feedback to use when analysing students' work.
The feedback students receive can include:
Compliments for criteria their work already meets.
Suggestions for criteria that could be improved.
For guidance on selecting suitable criteria, see Automated Feedback: Choosing the right criteria.
Privacy & ethics
Select Privacy & ethics to view information about the use of Automated Feedback and how student data is handled. The current Automated Feedback article also recommends using PDF files for the most consistent feedback results because they generally preserve formatting more reliably.
Stage 3 — Finalize activity
In Finalize activity, you can configure settings that apply across the activity.
Deadlines
Turn on Deadlines to add end dates to applicable learning steps.
The current Automated Feedback behaviour is that students need to submit their work before the relevant deadline in order to receive Automated Feedback. If no deadline is specified, students can continue using the submission step at their convenience.
Grade weighting
Turn on Grade weighting to configure grade weighting for the learning steps in the activity.
Automated Feedback itself is intended to provide formative feedback and should not be used to grade the quality of students' work.
Once everything is configured, click Done.
