What is Oral Reflection?
Oral Reflection lets students record a scaffolded, structured video response to prompts you define — on their own, or in conversation with the Acai voice agent. It works at any stage of the learning process: reflecting on a submitted piece of work, on a skill they are developing, or on the course as a whole.
Unlike Oral Practice, reflections are made to be seen: you can access students’ recordings and transcripts, review them, and give feedback.
Setting up Oral Reflection as a teacher
- Add the activity in your LMS and write your instructions.
- Define the reflection prompts — the structured topics and questions students respond to.
- Choose a reflection mode (see below).
- Decide whether to connect the reflection to submitted work. A submission step is optional: reflections can be anchored to a piece of work or run standalone.
Default feedback modules
Oral Reflection includes the same connected modules as Oral Assessment by default: Teachers give feedback to student work and Received feedback. They are added as a set, can only be removed together, are optional, and can be replaced with Peer Review.
Reflection modes in the Beta
- Solo reflection — the student records themselves responding to your prompts, which are shown on screen.
- Acai voice agent — the student reflects in conversation with Acai, which asks questions and follow-ups based on your prompts. Acai speaks English, and understands English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, and Dutch.
During the Beta, reflections are recorded individually. Support for group reflection will follow in a later release.
The optional Interaction Coach can support students during their reflection with on-screen suggestions, and the Conversation Assistant can suggest questions and follow-ups. See the Transparency Note: Interaction Coach and Conversation Assistant for how these work.
Reviewing reflections
You can access each student’s recording and transcript. Acai highlights notable moments with timestamped links to help you find the passages that matter — highlights are suggestions only and contain no judgment or score. You give feedback through the feedback modules; timestamped feedback on specific moments in the recording is not available during the Beta. Structured video responses can be reviewed formatively or graded like other FeedbackFruits activities.
Student experience
Students open the activity in their LMS on a phone, tablet, or desktop — no special equipment needed. After a short onboarding and granting camera and microphone access, they see your prompts and record their structured video response, solo or in conversation with Acai. They can re-record their reflection before finalizing it if they want another take. Afterwards they can review their recording, and receive your feedback through the Received feedback module.
