New releases
Single submission across learning steps in Design Studio
[Fig. 1. A single submission flowing into both Peer Review and Assignment Review steps]
Students can now use one submission across multiple review steps in the same Design Studio activity. Previously, an activity that combined peer feedback and teacher feedback on the same deliverable required students to hand in their work twice. With this update, a single submission can feed directly into every review step that follows it.
This means an activity can now flow naturally from start to finish, for example:
- Instructions
- Submission
- Peer Review
- Assignment Review
- Reflection
What are the key benefits?
- Students hand in their work once, even when it is reviewed by both peers and teachers.
- Less confusion and fewer duplicate submissions, which means cleaner data and less time spent on support.
- Instructors can design richer activities that combine multiple feedback moments around a single piece of work.
How to use it?
- Open the Design Studio in any space you have access to.
- Build an activity with a Submission step, then add the review steps you want to follow it (for example two Peer Reviews, or a Peer Review and Assignment Review).
- The review steps draw on the same submission automatically. No second hand-in is required from students.
- Save the activity and implement it in your LMS course.
Why did we create this?
Design Studio was built to give instructors the freedom to create learning designs that fit their unique teaching scenarios. Having students receive feedback from both peers and teachers on the same deliverable is a common, valuable pattern. Requiring two separate submissions to make it work added friction for students and instructors alike. Letting one submission span multiple review steps removes that friction and unlocks learning designs that simply weren't possible before.
What's the availability?
This feature is automatically available to all partners with access to the Learning Design Studio.
Improvements for teachers and LMS admins
Programming language support in Interactive Document and document submissions
[Fig. 2. A programming language file rendered for annotation, with student comments and teacher tools]
FeedbackFruits now supports common programming file types in any document context. Code files are converted into a document that can be annotated just like any other, both by students leaving peer comments and questions and by teachers using all the usual tools, including multiple-choice comments and discussion threads.
The following file types are now supported wherever documents are used, including student submissions in review tasks (as long as Document is an enabled submission type) and Interactive Document:
- JavaScript (.js)
- TypeScript (.ts)
- Python (.py)
- Java (.java)
- C (.c)
- C++ (.cpp)
- C# (.cs)
- Ruby (.rb)
- Go (.go)
- PHP (.php)
What are the key benefits?
- Partners can now run peer review and feedback on programming assignments, a use case that wasn't supported before.
- Code is annotated inline using the same familiar tools as any other document, so there is nothing new for students or teachers to learn.
- STEM and coding courses can now run the same collaborative feedback loops already used across other disciplines.
How to use it?
- In an activity that uses documents (such as Peer Review with a Document submission type, or Interactive Document), upload or have students upload a file in one of the supported languages.
- The file is converted into an annotatable document automatically.
- Annotate, comment, and run discussions exactly as you would with any other document.
