Introducing: AI Practice
Developing AI literacy can take many forms, and the number of available options may feel overwhelming at first. AI Practice provides a structured starting point for both teachers and students to begin engaging with AI in a meaningful and transparent way.
Getting Started
To use AI Practice, your institution will need to be signed up for the beta. If you do not see AI Practice in your toolpicker, please reach out to your Pilot or Partner Manager. They will be able to confirm whether the activity is enabled for your institution and, if not, whether it can be activated.
How It Works
For teachers, AI Practice is available as a ready-to-use activity in the tool picker. It includes pre-configured instructions and a rubric so you can quickly implement it in your course. These can be adapted or completely rewritten if you prefer to align the activity more closely with your learning objectives.
For students, the activity centres on a conversation with AI, guided by the instructions set by their teacher. This interaction may take the form of an open discussion to reach a conclusion, or it may be used to improve a piece of draft work. In either case, the steps are the same:
-
Read the instructions provided
-
Begin the conversation - optionally, upload a file to serve as context for the discussion (bearing in mind that AI Practice can only recognise text-based input)
-
Submit the conversation when complete
After submission, the activity can take different directions depending on its design. Teachers can monitor ongoing conversations and access analytics once submissions begin. Instructors may also choose to add additional steps, such as peer review or tutor-led feedback, which follow the same structure and settings as other FeedbackFruits learning activities, including deadlines and anonymity options.
FAQ
Are conversations visible to teachers before submission?
No. A student’s conversation only becomes visible once it has been submitted.
How do students submit their conversation?
Students must send at least two messages to unlock the submit button. The conversation is only considered submitted after the button is pressed. Submission status will be clearly indicated in the conversation interface.
Can students edit or delete their messages?
Yes. Messages can be edited, but doing so will delete the conversation from that point forward, as branching is not currently supported. Submissions can also be deleted entirely until either the deadline has passed or reviews have begun. Students may continue editing and resubmitting up to that point.
How are titles generated for student submissions?
A title is automatically generated at the time of submission.
Can students submit files, and is there a limit?
Yes, students can upload a file if they wish, but it is not required. At present, the limit is one file per submission, and this cannot be adjusted.
How is the conversation scaffolded?
Teachers can decide whether to display sample prompts to students at the beginning of the activity. These provide optional starting points for the conversation. Prompts remain the same unless a file is uploaded, in which case slightly different suggestions are shown. Students may choose to use one of the prompts or begin their conversation independently.
What sample prompts are available?
Without a file:
Help me write an essay
Find my missing perspectives
Help me problem solve
Help me with my study
With a file:
Help improve my writing
Provide missing perspectives
Show conflicting evidence
Help me study the subjects
Is edit history visible?
No. Only the most recent version of the conversation is shown when submitted. Edit history is not visible to teachers or peers.
