We're busy at FeedbackFruits building out the Learning Design System, one system for all your learning design needs. As one of the steps on that journey, we're excited to introduce a refreshed and more powerful way to support the creation of flexible learning activity designs, and an improved library interface to scale designs across your institution.
In this article, we’ll walk you through what’s changing, what stays the same, and what you can expect from this part of the Learning Design System.
Key Changes We're Introducing
We’ve redesigned the experience to make it more intuitive and supportive for all stages of the design and teaching process. Here's what's changing:
- A new look and layout: A fresh sidebar navigation, breadcrumb navigation to move between pages, and improved organization within the spaces.
- New terminology: Some names are changing to better reflect how everything fits into the broader learning design process.
- More flexible design workflows: The new system prepares for even more powerful tools, including Design Studio – an add-on that allows you to create custom learning activities using modular building blocks.
1. Improved User Interface
The interface has been refreshed to enhance usability, making it easier than ever to navigate and perform key actions.

2. Clearer Terminology
We've updated the language throughout the platform to be more user-friendly and intuitive. See the table below for a breakdown of the terminology changes:
Previous term | New term | Definition |
Library | Space | A space in which users can define activity templates, rubrics, and learning journeys for a department, programme, or for themselves. |
Template | Activity Template | A more specific version of an activity - normally has certain configurations or content added to support a particular use case. |
Learning Journey | Learning Journey | A series of activities grouped under one intended purpose - similar to being put in a "folder" together. |
Competency Group | Competency Group | A category that represents a group of rubrics. |
Rubric | Rubric | A rubric which contains criteria, levels, and level descriptions, to create understanding of what is expected of a student. |
Insights | Insights | Group term of the place in which educators and institutions as a whole can access to data on their students, courses or cohorts. |
(No previous term) | Content | Content covers features such as rubrics for now - we will be expanding this in the future. |
Tool | Learning Activity | "Learning activities" better reflects the intent of our platform - previously we offered tools as ready to go learning activities, but with the introduction of the Design Studio users can create their own activities. |
3. More flexible learning activity creation
By using the studio in the Learning Design System, you can now create Custom Learning Activities to support use cases at your institution. You can learn more about the Learning Design Studio here.
How Will This Impact You?
What stays the same?
- You’ll still be able to create activity templates, learning journeys, and rubrics as before.
- The process for editing and managing templates remains very similar – now with a cleaner interface.
- Portfolios, and other insights can still be found in sidebar navigation.
When is the new system coming?
The first version of the Learning Design System is ready for use with the 13th June Release. Your FeedbackFruits contact will let you know when the new design is available for your institution.
