The Acai Feedback Coach feature assists students in writing better reviews for their peers in Peer Review and Group Member Evaluation activities and helps them with self-assessments in supported FeedbackFruits assignments. It provides real-time tips to help improve the quality of the feedback, not only coaching students on how to write better feedback, but also increasing the quality of feedback they receive from their peers and through self-reflection.
Acai Feedback Coach 2.0 is available upon request for eligible institutions and regions. Please get in touch with your FeedbackFruits representative to enable this feature for you.
What is Feedback Coach 2.0? How is it different from the previous version?
Feedback Coach 2.0 uses advanced Large Language Models provided by Azure OpenAI Service to process students’ input and provide feedback.
We use Azure’s OpenAI Service to deliver this feature because of its enterprise-level security, compliance, and regional availability.
Compared to its predecessor, Feedback Coach 2.0 is:
Faster and more scalable
Better able to take context, such as feedback criteria, into account
More capable of suggesting specific, actionable improvements to student feedback and self-assessment text
Feedback Coach 1.0 has been deprecated and is no longer supported. Feedback Coach 2.0 is now the only available and supported version of this feature.
Is my data sent to OpenAI to train their language models?
No. Students’ input is processed by language models hosted by Azure only to generate automated feedback.
The input is never used to train, retrain, or improve any of the Azure OpenAI Service models.
We use these models as a “plug-and-play” service. We do not retrain or fine-tune them with student data beyond providing custom instructions (prompts) that describe how the model should respond.
We do not use any student data to train or improve our own models for this feature.
For more information about how your data is processed, please consult our Transparency Note: Acai Coach
How can I enable this feature in a Peer Review or Group Member Evaluation activity as a teacher?
In a Peer Review or Group Member Evaluation activity:
Go to the
Given reviewsmodule.Navigate to the
Guiding studentssection.Enable the feature by toggling on the option “Feedback coach.”
Save or publish the activity.
What does the Feedback Coach look like when it's working?
After the teacher has enabled the Feedback Coach feature:
Students will see “Feedback Coach” in their feedback-giving window when they begin to write reviews for other students or reflect on their own work.
As soon as the student starts typing, Acai processes the content and provides suggestions.
Suggestions update in real time as the student adds to or edits their text.
In Peer Review activities, the coach can also appear in the sidebar, depending on the configuration.
The coach typically prompts students to:
Be more specific and concrete
Connect their comments to the rubric or criteria
Balance positive feedback with constructive suggestions
Can I choose to not use this feature as a student, even if my teacher has enabled it for me?
Yes. Students can disable or enable Acai Feedback Coach at any time in their FeedbackFruits preferences. This allows students to decide how much AI coaching they want, even when teachers have enabled the feature in an activity.
What is included in your prompt?
A prompt is a set of instructions given to a large language model to guide how it should respond. Because prompts define how the feature behaves, they are considered intellectual property and we cannot share the exact wording.
However, the prompt for Automated Feedback Coach 2.0 includes elements such as:
Respond in a helpful, coach-like way
Ensure that feedback addresses the given criteria
Include feedback and context (such as criteria) in a specific format
Compliment and encourage students to give better feedback
Do not respond to gibberish, random text, or content unrelated to giving feedback to a peer
Offer clear areas for improvement
In what language is this feature available?
Acai Feedback Coach 2.0 can give feedback in English and is being expanded to support additional languages over time.
The language of the feedback depends primarily on the student’s language settings in FeedbackFruits.
The quality of AI-generated feedback may vary by language. Quality is typically highest in English because most training data for advanced language models is in English, and the quantity and quality of available data in other languages differs.
For the latest information on supported languages in your environment, please consult your FeedbackFruits representative or the Acai documentation.
