In an Interactive Document, Interactive Video or Interactive Audio, both teachers and students are able to add question cards and discussion threads. As a teacher you can disable one or both options for your students, please see how to do this in set up guides for Interactive Video, Interactive Document or Interactive Audio.

Clicking the plus-button within a document, video or audio file, gives you the option to add a discussion threads or a question cards. The plus-button shows when selecting part of the text or scrolling over the timeline. For Interactive Document, there is also a plus-button in the lower right corner of the display: this will add an overall question card or discussion thread, not specifically linked to a certain part of the file. 

Adding questions and discussion threads works the same for all three tools. The examples shown in this article are from an Interactive Video.

Question Cards

When you click on Question card, you will have to choose between a multiple choice question, scratch off question, poll question, or an open question.

Multiple Choice Questions

To create a multiple-choice question, start by writing your question and filling in the answer options. You can also attach an image by clicking the paperclip icon. To add more options, click Add Answer. Indicate the correct answer(s) by ticking the corresponding box(es). If multiple answers are correct, you can tick multiple boxes. You can include an explanation for the correct answer by clicking + Add Explanation.

If you want students to select more than one answer, enable the Allow participants to select multiple choices option. A student’s response will be considered correct as long as they select at least one of the correct answers.

By enabling the option Students are required to answer this question before continuing the video (document or audio), the portion of the video (document or audio) following the question will remain hidden until students provide an answer as described above.

Scratch-off Questions

By choosing Scratch-off questions, the student has multiple attempts at answering the question, but loses possible grade points at every incorrect attempt. If this mode is enabled, only one answer can be selected as the correct answer.

Poll Questions

With a poll question, students will be able to select an answer based on your given prompt. You can add an attachment by clicking on the paperclip, and can toggle to allow for multiple answers per student.

Open Question

For open questions, you enter the question and (optionally) the correct answer. Next to adding text, it is also possible to add an image to the question by clicking on the paperclip.

Once a student has answered the question, they will see the model answer and can indicate whether their response is correct, almost correct, or incorrect. If no correct answer has been provided, students will not need to assess their answer, and the question will be considered neither correct nor incorrect.

The teacher can always view students' answers to the question. By default, students will also see these answers after responding, but they will be anonymized. You can disable this feature by turning off the toggle next to Students see anonymized answers by their peers after answering.

You can also use our AI to generate questions. Simply highlight a sentence or paragraph in the document and click Suggest, and it will generate a question and also provides the correct answer based on the highlighted text. This feature also works for videos and audio, but it requires subtitles to allow the AI to read and create a question from the content.

When students create a question, they will not see this option. For questions that are created by students, the teacher decides in the settings if students can see the answers of their peers. You can find more information about where to enable this option in our set up help articles (you can find them here: Interactive Video, Interactive Document, Interactive Audio).

If you enable the option Students are required to answer this question before continuing the video, the portion of the video, document, or audio following the question will be hidden until students provide an answer. For Interactive Document, students will not be able to read the rest of the document. For Interactive Video or Audio, students will not be able to continue watching or listening until they answer the question.

Note: The question does not need to be answered correctly in order to continue reading, watching, or listening. For students, this option is unavailable; peers will always be able to skip the question.

Click Publish to add the question to the video. Please note that the question will not be saved unless you publish it.

Discussion Thread

To add a discussion thread, select the relevant section of the video, document, or audio, click the plus button, and choose Discussion Thread. Write your comment in the right sidebar. You can attach a file (such as a video, PDF, or image) or a voice message by clicking the paperclip icon below the text field. You can also enable the option Require students to contribute to this thread before continuing the video (document/audio) if desired. AI Suggest is also available in the discussion thread. Clicking Suggest will generate a prompt question/statement for students to discuss.

Click Publish to save your thread and add it to the video (document/audio).

Other Functionality 

• When creating a question card or a discussion thread, you can always change the selected part of the text or timeline. You can just make a new selection and this will update automatically. You can also delete the selection by clicking on the cross next to the timestamp/page number (as is shown in the image above).

• Both the teacher and students are able to edit or delete their own discussion threads, question cards or replies to discussion threads. The teacher is also able to delete the discussion threads, question cards and replies to comments of students when necessary.

• Both the teacher and students are able to reply to discussion threads.

• Both the teacher and students are able to upvote question answers, discussion threads and each other's replies to comments by clicking on the thumbs up button.

• When viewing a created question or comment in the sidebar on the right, you can click the link above your question/statement to navigate to the part in the document, video or audio file where the comment or question card was inserted.
