A step-by-step guide on how to set up an Assignment Review assignment

Updated over a week ago

This article takes you through the process of setting up an Assignment Review assignment.

Assignment Review is a tool designed to streamline the process of assessing student assignments. It allows educators to provide structured, meaningful feedback on individual or group assignments. Our tool aims to elevate the educational experience by enabling instructors to deliver timely, actionable feedback that fosters student growth and engagement.

All our tools are set up in steps. In Step 1 you will set overall instructions. In Step 2, you set the options for handing in work. In Step 3 you adjust the settings to do with providing feedback to your students. In Step 4 you have the option to change the settings for the feedback the students received. Furthermore, you are able to add two additional learning steps; automatic feedback and reflection writing.

Step 1: Instructions

First, write your assignment title. Then you can either create a brand-new assignment, or click [use copy of existing] in the top right, to select a previous Assignment Review assignment by you or one of your colleagues.

In this tutorial, we will create an assignment from scratch.

Instructions

Fill in your overall instructions for the assignment. Note that you will not be able to publish/save the assignment if you leave this field blank.

Student collaboration

Click on [change] to choose between an individual assignment, group assignment, or individually shown in groups. You can find more information about assigning students to groups or taking over groups from your LMS in this guide

You are now able to choose any of the following collaboration options:

  • Individually.
Use this option if you want students to hand in their work individually and should be reviewed individually as well. All feedback provided to the student will be based on their individual submission and will only visible to them.

  • As a group
Use this option if you want students to hand in their work as a group and should also be reviewed as a group. In this case, the students will submit their assignment as a group and the feedback which can be provided to your students will be visible for all group members.

  • Individually, show as groups
Use this option if you want students to hand in their work individually and be reviewed individually, but show within their group. This option allows for students to be displayed to the teacher in groups selected from the LMS. This collaboration option makes it easier for multiple teachers to work together in one assignment.

Step 2: Submissions

Required submissions Set the amount of files that students are required to hand in. The submission requirement can be set at exactly, minimum or between your chosen amount.

Scheduling deadlines Set the hand-in deadline. Students have to upload their work before this deadline. You can start reviewing their work after this deadline, or, when no deadline is set, you could start reviewing once a student has uploaded his/her work. After setting a date, you will see the option to allow all students to hand in after the deadline or give a deadline extension to a specific student.

Plagiarism check (beta feature)

In response to plagiarism in student work, we have introduced industry-standard plagiarism checking, powered by Turnitin. This functionality is in beta and requires configuration from an LMS admin and FeedbackFruits. If you are interested, please inform your contact person or Pilot and Partner Manager at FeedbackFruits to guide you through the integration. Read more about FeedbackFruits and Turnitin here.

After activating this setting, student submissions will go under an automatic plagiarism check carried by Turnitin, not by FeedbackFruits. Note that students will have to accept Turnitin's Terms of Use the first time they use this functionality.

File requirements Check the box next to the file type you want your students to hand in. Students will not be able to upload file types you deselect. For an overview of which formats are supported for each file type, click here.

Visibility If you select only the allocated reviewers, handed-in work and the feedback provided is only visible for the student who submitted the work and the teacher. If you select everyone, every student will be able to view the work and its review(s). Students will also be able to comment on the feedback, and give up-votes (likes) to feedback/comments. Note that if you choose this option and do not set a deadline, submitted work will be visible as soon as it is uploaded.  If you select only students who handed in, just those students who have handed in will be able to see and comment.

Guiding students (optional) If you have specific hand-in instructions for your students (such as the desired font, line spacing, naming the file, etc.) fill them in here.

Step 3: Give feedback on student work

To structure the feedback you provide your students with, you can set some criteria in this step. This makes it easier for students to see where they need to improve, and it gives them a structured overview of their feedback. Do you only want to provide your students with formative feedback, or do you also want to give them grades for some criteria? Rubrics can also be used. Click [configure] to add, edit or delete criteria. Click here for a detailed guide on setting criteria.

Under the feedback criteria you will find Explanation cards, here you are able to use the feature of re-using previously created explanation cards.

Step 4: Received reviews

In this step you are able to set turn on the option for students to rate their received feedback. The students will be able to give points and write a comment.

Below you are able to set a deadline for students to read their received feedback. Students will not be able to read the feedback for points after the deadline has passed (if points assigned to this step). Note that students can still view the feedback after the deadline. If you do not set a deadline, students can always complete reading the feedback for points (if points assigned to this step).

Grading

By default, you will see the grading module in the assignment. However, if you wish to remove this, you are able to by pressing the [x] button in the top right corner. In this module, you are able to assign a number of points to each step the student completed.

After removal of the grading module, you are always able to find this again in the learning step module discussed in the next section.

Step 5: Add learning step (optional)

The learning step module, which you will find at the end of the final step, can be activated by clicking on the purple-circle-plus-button. On this window, you are able to add reflections on the activity and automated feedback on writing.

Automated feedback on writing

Setting up Automated Feedback provides your students with additional formative feedback prior to handing in their work. Please do not use Automated Feedback to grade your students, but only provide it to them as an extra opportunity to reflect and improve upon their work. We are continuously working on improving our feedback by better training our algorithms, which means that we can’t guarantee flawless feedback. Take a look at our help article for more information about our new feature.

Reflect on activity

Writing a reflection is a valuable step to end an assignment with. The student can for instance write a reflection on how the whole process of giving feedback went. In the image below, you can see that it can have a deadline, as well as a required length of words. There is also a description field in which you can specify what you want students to reflect on regarding the assignment. Students can start with this step when the teacher completed step 3 ‘Give feedback on student work’. Students can then begin writing their reflection on the assignment (even before having read the feedback yet).

This concludes the Setting up Assignment Review tutorial.
