In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of setting up an assignment with Automated Feedback and Peer Review in your course.

Automated Feedback is a supporting module for students. As a teacher you will be able to see which of the pre-defined criteria your students passed. Nevertheless, it cannot be used to grade students. Setting up Automated Feedback will spare you giving repetitive feedback, and will provide your students with additional formative feedback moments that can help improve the quality of their work.

To use Automated Feedback in Peer Review, you can either create an assignment with Automated Feedback as the main external tool of choice or choose Peer Review. For specific help on how to add either of the FeedbackFruits tools to your LMS environment, navigate to these articles.

Creating an assignment

First, write your assignment title. Then, you can either create a brand new assignment or click use “copy of existing” to select a previous Peer Review assignment. A copy of this existing assignment will include all teacher contributions (instructions, deadlines, criteria) of that assignment. Student contributions are not copied. After the copy is made, you can still adjust all settings.

Adding Peer Review to your Automated Feedback assignment

If you choose Automated Feedback as the main tool of choice, you can add Peer Review as an extra module once you scroll down to Step 3: Automated Feedback.
Below this step, you can add an additional module by clicking on the "+" .

From here you can select "Peer Review" as an additional module. After selecting this module, two additional steps (step 4 and 5) will appear.

Adding Automated Feedback to your Peer Review assignment

If you choose Peer Review as the main tool of choice, you can add Automated Feedback as an extra module once you scroll down to Step 4: Received reviews.
Below this step, you can add an additional module by clicking on the "+" .

From here you can select "Automated Feedback" as an additional module. After selecting this module, an additional step 3 will appear in your set up.

Step 1: Instructions

Fill in your overall instructions for the assignment. Please note that you will not be able to publish/save the assignment if you leave this field blank.

The assignment can be an individual- or a group assignment. Click change to choose between one of the following three options.

Step 2: Hand in

Instructions (optional)
If you have specific hand-in instructions for your students (such as the desired font, line spacing, naming the file, etc.) fill them in here.

Deadline
Be sure to select a deadline for your students to use Automated Feedback. Setting the deadline will allow for students to continuously upload their submission(s) to Automated Feedback until this deadline passes. After this is done, the final and improved version will be send through to their peers to focus on the next level of feedback.

Required Submissions
Here you can set the amount of files that students are required to hand in. Note that students will not be assigned to a peer for review if they submit fewer files than required. The submission requirement can be set at exactly, minimum or between your chosen amount.

Setting the required submissions greater than 1 will mean all submissions uploaded will be send through to the peers of the student. If you use the tools for one assignment and require one final version, be sure to select required submissions is exactly 1 to ensure students review the correct version.

Settings

Finally, you can determine the number of files each student has to hand in, and the type of file. Automated Feedback only supports written documents at this moment, so select the documents box to ensure students don't hand in other files. You can also choose to allow land hand in if preferred.

Visibility
Finally, at visibility you can decide on who sees the student work and the received peer feedback. These options only relate to the results of peer feedback, the results of Automated Feedback will not be shown.

Step 3: Automated Feedback

Once your assignment details are set up, you can start configuring Automated Feedback. If you have any questions regarding our ethics & privacy policies, please make sure to read through these before getting started. If you’re ready to start setting up your preferred criteria, please navigate to get started.

If you click on start building, the feedback criteria offered will pop-up on right. You can now start selecting different criteria that you would like the work of your students to be checked upon.

Any criterion that contains an arrow requires extra configuration steps. Any others will be automatically inserted once selected.

Choosing the right criteria

In order to help you decide which criteria are best suited for your writing assignment, please refer to this article.

Step 4: Given reviews

In this step, you can specify criteria that help guide students as they give feedback. Click here for a detailed guide on setting criteria. You can set deadline for students to review each other's work or leave it blank to allow for viewing and editing indefinitely. At students see their received feedback, you can decide when the students can see their feedback.

Step 5 : Received reviews

At this step you can ask students for a written reflection (optional) on the feedback they received. You can select a deadline to write the reflection for students. If it passes, students can still view the feedback they received. Under Settings you can customize your instructions for the written reflection
