Introduction

In this article we will walk you through how to use Peer Review from the perspective of a student.

If you’d like more information on how this tool works, you can check out the overview article here:

Tool In Action

Step 1: Instructions

In this step, you are required to read the instructions set by your instructor. If you’ve been assigned work as part of a group, you will see the people that are in your group.

Step 2: Submissions

In this step, you are required to hand in your file(s). You can either click select file to upload a file from your computer or drag a file into the box.

You also have the possibility to paste a website link, for example, if you want to upload a YouTube video. Read here which video platforms are supported - make sure that the link has to be publicly available.

Image showing the hand in screen - in a group assignment, there is a singular file to be handed in as a group. The image shows a dropbox to drop your file into, a button to select a file from your PC, and a field to paste a link into.

When you have handed in your work, the following screen will appear. Depending on the settings of the assignment, you can add more files. By clicking on your file, you can view your submission in a separate window. If you have uploaded the wrong file, you can delete your submission by clicking on the trash icon and you can upload a new file afterwards.

This is an indication that you may proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Giving Feedback

In this step, you are tasked with providing feedback to yourself and/or your peers’ deliverable(s). Before you can start reviewing, another student or group has to submit their work for work to be assigned to you. If the teacher has set a hand-in deadline, you will get work assigned to you after the deadline.

Task Overview

If self-assessment is enabled by your teacher, you'll need to begin by completing your self-assessment before providing feedback to your peers.

If you are not assigned to review anything yet, you will see this screen below.

Image showing view of review work available to the student - the message ‘waiting for work from peers to be assigned to you’ is visible as no files have been uploaded for review yet.

Once you have work available to review, this module will change to show the files you can give feedback on:

You will also see a "Compare and adjust your ratings" (optional) line item. This screen provides an overview of all the ratings you have given, allowing you to compare and adjust them as needed. This is an optional step. It's recommended to use this feature after completing all reviews.

Provide your Feedback

Click on the line item in the task overview or on 'Start Reviewing'. The following screen is the review packet you will need to begin completing. Your teacher has established specific criteria to guide and support your review process.

To begin giving feedback, click on the ‘Open’ to access the deliverable.

You will be directed to a screen that shows the deliverable alongside a feedback panel. This panel enables you to start writing feedback. Here are some ways you can provide feedback:

  1. You may begin by selecting a section of the document. Then, choose a criterion. Your comment will have an annotation chip attached, indicating the page number. Additionally, a green speech icon will appear on the deliverable screen to show where your comment has been left.

  2. You may select 'Write Comment' to provide feedback related to a criterion without annotating any part of the document.

  3. You can start by selecting ratings for each criterion and leaving a comment. Please note that you can deselect the rating to leave it blank.

  4. Click on the ‘+’ button to write your comment. Select a criterion and if needed, you can even add an annotation at this point.

  5. When giving feedback on videos the student can click on purple plus (+) icon on the timeline. The comment will be attached to the selected timestamp.

Please ensure that you click on the ‘Post Comment’ button once you have finished writing your comment. Failure to do so will result in the comment not being posted in the system; instead, it will be saved until you navigate away from the screen.

After finishing your review, navigate to the top left corner of the screen and click the "Back arrow" button. This action will display the complete review packet for a final check. Within the main review packet, you'll find all the feedback you've written on the feedback panel.

Depending on the number of peers required for review, as specified by your instructor, you can consult the task overview to determine the appropriate approach. In this case, I have one more peer to review.

Select 'Next' option in the top right corner of the screen. The popover will display the upcoming task. In this instance, clicking 'Start Reviewing' will determine the peer you need to review.

If there is no peer available for review, such as when your peer hasn't submitted their deliverable yet, the system will notify you accordingly. Please remember to check back later for updates.

Once you have finished all your required reviews, you can proceed to the ‘Ratings Overview’ screen. This feature enables you to compare and potentially adjust your ratings, offering a comprehensive summary of all the reviews you've provided. By presenting your feedback in a side-by-side format, this screen offers a holistic perspective that may prompt you to reconsider your evaluations. This step is optional.

Click on the ‘Adjust Ratings’ dropdown to see peers in the next criteria.

This comparative view encourages a deeper reflection on your assessments, empowering you to refine and optimize your ratings as needed. If you wish to make edits to your comments, simply navigate to the individual review packets, click on the three-dot menu of the comment, and proceed to make your edits there.

When you are satisfied with your reviews, press done.

You will be taken back to the ‘Give feedback to your peers’ Task Overview screen where you will receive a confirmation that this step is complete. This is an indication that you may now proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: Read Received Feedback

In this step, you are required to read the feedback you have received from your peers/teacher. This allows you to gain valuable insights, identify areas for improvement, and consider different perspectives to enhance your learning and development.

If you are awaiting feedback, the step will be presented as shown in the image below.

Once your peers have completed their reviews of your work, you can take the opportunity to read and reflect on the feedback you've received.

Image showing the option to read received feedback - the submission made by the viewer is available. It shows there is feedback from 1 reviewer ready for viewing with 2 unread comments.

Browse received feedback

'View Reviews' navigates you directly to your review packet. The packet reflects all the feedback you have received from your peers/teachers.

'Show feedback given to' filter defaults to 'All Reviewers'. This provides a consolidated view of all feedback you have received, enabling you to review all feedback swiftly without navigating multiple sections.

When navigating the Feedback section of the 'All Reviewers' packet, you can hover over the ratings to view who assigned that rating. Additionally, 'New' buttons indicate unread comments.

Click on the ‘View Feedback’ button to access and review the feedback provided. All received feedback can now be conveniently viewed within your review packet. Look out for blue indicator buttons, which pinpoint areas requiring your attention.

Review, respond or upvote:

You may view ratings and comments view the review packet or the side bar. It is possible to respond to these comments or upvote them.

When you are done reading all the received feedback, your progress will be shown as completed in your review overview.

If you navigate to the Read received feedback Task Overview and the progress will also read ‘Completed’. This is an indication that you may now proceed to Step 5.

Step 5: Reflect on the Assignment (if made available)

If your teacher has added the step to reflect on the assignment, it will be shown at step 5. Students can start with this step when step 3 ‘Give feedback to your peers’ is completed. When this is not yet the case, the step will be presented as shown in the image below.

When ‘Give feedback to your peers’ step is completed, you will notice an empty reflection box.

Below is an example of a student that completed their reflection on their assignment. When the assignment deadline has passed (if there is a deadline), the reflection cannot be edited anymore.

Image showing a student’s given reflection on the assignment based on their teacher’s prompt - as this is submitted before the deadline, there is an edit button at the bottom of the reflection.

Step 6: Grades

Finally, at the bottom of the assignment, the grade distribution is shown. These criteria are set by your teacher according to their grading rubric and show a breakdown of the different areas available to receive grading points, as well as their weight in your total grade.

When the teacher hasn't yet made the grades available to students, the grading section will be blank.

Good to Know

  • If your teacher has set deadlines, they will be reflected on every step of the process. If the deadline has passed, you may approach your teacher to request an extension.

  • If anonymity is enabled, the students work under a pseudonym, but the teacher can always see the student name.

  • Submissions: You may remove and re-upload a submission up until the deadline OR if a peer has begun reviewing the deliverable

  • Multiple deliverables: If your peer has submitted multiple deliverables, you only need to complete one review packet. This means that you'll evaluate your peer's entire assignment as a whole, providing comprehensive feedback, instead of separate reviews for each deliverable.

  • Editing/Deleting your comment: You may edit or delete your comment at any time by clicking on the three dot menu. You are able to edit your comments and ratings right up until the deadline.
