In an Interactive Document, Interactive Video or Interactive Audio, both teachers and students are able to add question cards and discussion threads. As a teacher you can disable one or both options for your students, please see how to do this in set up guides for Interactive Video, Interactive Document or Interactive Audio.
Clicking the plus-button within a document, video or audio file, gives you the option to add a discussion threads or a question cards. The plus-button shows when selecting part of the text or scrolling over the timeline. For Interactive Document, there is also a plus-button in the lower right corner of the display: this will add an overall question card or discussion thread, not specifically linked to a certain part of the file.
Adding questions and discussion threads works the same for all three tools. The examples shown in this article are from an Interactive Video.
When you click on Question card, you will have to choose between an open question or a multiple choice question.
For open questions, you enter the question and (optionally) the correct answer. Next to adding text, it is also possible to add an image to the question by clicking on the paperclip.
After a student has answered the question, they will see this model answer and can indicate whether their answer is correct, almost correct or wrong. If no correct answer was added, students will not have to indicate if their answer was correct or not and the question will be counted as neither correct nor incorrect.
The teacher is always able to see students' answers to the question. By default, students will also see these answers after answering the question, but then anonymised. You can disable this by switching off the toggle next to Students see anonymized answers by their peers after answering.
When students create a question, they will not see this option. For questions that are created by students, the teacher decides in the settings if students can see the answers of their peers. You can find more information about where to enable this option in our set up help articles (you can find them here: Interactive Video, Interactive Document, Interactive Audio).
If you enable the option Students are required to answer this question before continuing the video, the part of the video (document or audio) that comes after the question will be hidden for students until they answer the question. In case of an Interactive Document, students will not be able to read the rest of the document. In case of an Interactive Video or Audio, students will not be able to continue watching or listening until they have answered the question. Note that the question doesn't have to be answered correctly to continue reading/watching/listening. As a student you do not have this option, peers will always be able to skip the question.
Click Publish to add the question to the video. Note that the question will not be saved if you do not publish it.
Multiple choice questions
To create a multiple choice question, write your question and fill in the answer options. Also for multiple choice questions, it is possible to add an image by clicking on the paperclip. Click add answer to add more options. Tick the box(es) next to answers to indicate which answer(s) are correct. If several answers are correct, you can tick multiple boxes. If you want students to be able to select multiple answers, make sure to also enable the option Allow participants to select multiple choices. If a student chooses at least one of the correct answers, their answer will be counted as correct.
If you enable the option Students are required to answer this question before continuing the video, the part of the video (document or audio) that comes after the question will be hidden for students until they answer the question as explained above.
Click Publish to save your question and add it to the video.
To add a discussion thread, select the appropriate section of the video, document or audio, click on the plus-button and click on Discussion thread. Write your comment in the right sidebar. You can add an attachment (for example a video, PDF file or image) or a voice recorded message to the thread by clicking on the paperclip below the text field. Click Publish to save your thread and add it to the video.
When creating a question card or a discussion thread, you can always change the selected part of the text or timeline. You can just make a new selection and this will update automatically. You can also delete the selection by clicking on the cross next to the timestamp/page number (as is shown in the image above).
Both the teacher and students are able to edit or delete their own discussion threads, question cards or replies to discussion threads. The teacher is also able to delete the discussion threads, question cards and replies to comments of students when necessary.

Both the teacher and students are able to upvote question answers, discussion threads and each other's replies to comments by clicking on the thumbs up button.
When viewing a created question or comment in the sidebar on the right, you can click on the blue link (see image below) to navigate to the part in the document, video or audio file where the comment or question card was inserted.
