FeedbackFruits rubrics display in Canvas

How rubrics and grading in FeedbackFruits works within Canvas.

Updated over a week ago

In this article we will explain how rubrics and grading in FeedbackFruits works within Canvas (Instructure).

Up until Summer 2023, learning designers and teachers would create rubrics via FeedbackFruits, through the regular activity set up flow. These rubrics would live within the FeedbackFruits assignment, and the ratings and grading from these would be seamlessly transferred to Canvas' Gradebook.

Now, Canvas displays and allows users to edit their rubrics outside of FeedbackFruits, right under the activity. Please see the picture below.

(Fig. 1: FeedbackFruits assignment with open Canvas rubric edit display.)

Important: when editing a rubric within FeedbackFruits, that will update the one in Canvas. However, the workflow doesn't work the other way around. In other words, if a rubric is edited via Canvas, the changes will not apply to FeedbackFruits.

While we see the value on having a rubric shortcut, the current workflow (not sync-ing automatically) affects the user experience for both students and teachers. It's important to note:

  • The values (grading points) per criterion could differ, causing student and teacher confusion regarding differing scores.

  • At FeedbackFruits we work with percentage points, whereas the Canvas rubric reflects the raw number of points available for the assignment. This means that now, both students and instructors are presented with two differing rubrics where points are displayed differently, one on top of the other.

(Fig. 2: Differences between grading points in FeedbackFruits (25%, 65% and 10%) and Canvas rubrics (25pts, 40pts , 35pts).

To avoid confusion, if institutions do not want to see this Canvas rubric display, it is possible to disable API grading. The consequences of doing so are that when grades are published, the Gradebook wont show the breakdown of the grade nor the rubric information.
