Sentence length
Updated over a week ago

Sentence length is the number of words that you use in a sentence.

Why should I apply different sentence lengths?

Your sentences shouldn’t be either too long or too short, because this will make your text more difficult to follow. The average length of a sentence is between about 10 to 20 words. Sentences of about 30 to 40 words are generally considered too long.

How should I use different sentence lengths

Extremely long sentences should be split up into shorter sentences.

For example,

This is our vision in education, we provide the fundamentals of best patient care by our best developed health care professionals, we support our employees in their professionalization by sustainable education.

can be split up like this:

This is our vision in education, we provide the fundamentals of best patient care by our best developed health care professionals. We support our employees in their professionalization by sustainable education.

Extremely short sentences should be connected by transition words. The text reads more smoothly when the short sentences are connected by transition words.

For example,

The Learning & Development adviser supports the health care units. The Learning and Development adviser develops and manages educational projects.

can be connected like this:

The Learning & Development adviser supports the health care units and develops and manages educational projects.
